The ones sold on amazon and ebay use a shunt to monitor the battery current over time.




Alkaline:

For starters basic simple with a relatively straight curve (this is for alkaline batteries)
Non destructive method. Good for determining if batteries are "usable".
Take away each  of a .01 volt above 1.1v = ~1.8% capacity  remaining or .1v= ~18% capacity remaining.

1.63 volts new  1.1 dead =
Measure the voltage as in  1.58v volts-1.1   = .47v    multiple by 200   = 96%?
1.63 -1.1 =.53v range
.47 / .53=88%
 
6 1.6v baatteries
9.6 vs 6.6=3 volt range
8.79-6.6=2.19
2.19/3=.88  or 88% of the range of the voltage difference
