Plant chives in the early spring. Chives do best in full sun with fertile and well-draining soil. Providing chives with consistent water throughout the growing season will improve yields.

Chives are insect-pollinated, so growers looking to save seeds need to be conscious of isolation distance between chive varieties. A minimum of a mile of distance between varieties is recommended. Note that chives will not cross with garlic chives. If sufficient space for isolation isn't available, hand pollination is another option. To hand pollinate chives, use a fine paintbrush to mix pollen between several flowers. It is best to do this during a time when few insects are present. Before and after pollination, flowers should be covered with cages or bags to avoid pollination by insects.
