Splitting Microphones
Purpose: Sometimes you may wish to split the signal off of a dynamic microphone to two inputs for recording or monitor mixes.

The simplest solution that works is a Y cable.  1 Female to two Male Connectors.
Often folks become confused about which connector is a male xlr connector.
Look at the end and of your connectors and the male has pins recessed in the housing as opposed to sockets.
This works with condenser microphones also. Do not try this with ribbon mics or permanent damage is assured if phantom power is applied.

Simple method:

This is the Y adapter  like what you will need.
It is suggested that one buy one build like this as opposed to
one built with both wires terminated in the male connector for best durability.

Purpose: Splitting dynamic and condenser microphones.

One can use a
Black Box, Splitter Snake or Transformer Splitter. There are devices available  that will split the signal to more than 2 and more inputs available while conserving proper powering of condenser mics.

RapcoHorizon XLR "Y" Audio Cable

Noise Cancelling via Phase Reversal

You can use phase reversing on one of a pair of mics to cancel out unwanted background sounds on drummer vocal mics as a for instance. The drummer simply sings into one of the mics and the combined signals block out background drum kit sounds. This is particularly handy when using in ear monitors.

If you are handy with a solder iron you can simply reverse the signal lines (pins two and three)  on one of the Y connector female connectors to save purchasing a phase inverter adapter. See diagram below.
