No you dont. I use torx drive space screws. They work great
and I have never split the wood as long as you don’t over tighten.
I use
a desalt impact driver and stop once it clicks in soft wood and I watch
the joint and stop just when tight in hard woods.
If you never try to
torque them really tight, regular screws work fine. I have also used
drywall screws for interior projects with same results
It's not recommended that you use reg wood screws with this type
of application. Generally because the screw itself,
no matter the power
of your drill, will most likely split through the hole you've made with
the jig. You don't necessarily h
ave to use Kreg specific pocket
screws, but a pocket screw none the less, is definitely the best way to
go.
