Timers: To fully avoid and vampire loads use a spring type timer.
Two issues... Power savings and safety.
The Spring type timers can not be used for the bottom 5 percent of their range do to the needs of the mechanism.
The digital ones do have a half life which is typeical of most consumer electronics of 4 to 13 years.
Some of the  digital ones may not work with certain electronics.
The more expensive spring types will last for. Life exectancy 5 years.
The merits of a timer are directly proportional to the load being controlled.
You will find it difficult to justify auto off for light loads being switched on an off frequently using a spring type as that the cost will be more than the power used.
The wind up ones should never be forcibly shut off by turning the knob counterclockwise.
